The Joan Kandravy Foundation is a Pennsylvania non-profit public charity dedicated to helping individuals and families dealing with cancer. We are focused on supporting the resources in our community of Pittsburgh, PA who are providing patient-care, family support, and direct volunteerism as related to cancer, and more specifically, cancers of the brain. We opened the doors of the Joan Kandravy Foundation in 2011, soon after our mother Joan died of brain cancer and we are committed to making an impact in the lives of the people fighting on the front lines of this disease.
In 2008, Joan was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM), the most common and aggressive type of malignant primary brain tumor. The typical prognosis after discovery is around 12-14 months, with methods ranging from tumor resection, to radiation and chemotherapy. The outlook for patients with GBM is not good. But with wonderful care, amazing breakthroughs, and the love of family and friends, Joan stayed with us for over 23 months as she tried to double her odds of survival.
During those 2 years we all received a crash-course in brain cancer and we saw the impact that every medical breakthrough made, and felt the love and warmth that every gesture brought Joan, our family, and her friends. It is for these reasons that we have decided to give back in the best ways that we can: With our time, our love, and resources.
